We've been avoiding this for so long
Luxury is temporary then it's gone
I thought that we would happen
I guess I'm wrong
We'll say hi on the street
Then we'll move along
- Good Friday
The Black Crowes
Hammerstein knew he had made a mistake the moment he offered to be booked for The Buck U Cup Series. He knew there was only one match that could be booked...Anna Mathews, with her Estrel Medal on the line.
Naturally, the thought of adding more gold to his collection attracted him to the match, but there was something that tried to pull him away. Something screamed at him to . Hammerstein’s mind goes back to a different time in his life. A time when Anna and Jacob were in love with each other. When their days were filled with hard training and their nights were filled with tender moments. Twitter and phone conversations when they weren't together, filled with “I love you’s,” pet names, and the silly things that couples in love talk about to pass the time until the next “I love you.”
And, thinking back, he missed those times. He missed her.
Hammerstein hates himself for even thinking about these things. He knows these feelings should have dealt with, dead and buried, long ago. He loves Holly, and only Holly. He tells himself that over and over. But he can't deny that Anna still holds a piece of his heart.
Those thoughts weigh too heavy on him.
Hammerstein gets up from the table and walks out of the room, and into Holly's office. Holly follows him in, shuts the door, and sits down next to him.
What's wrong, Hammie?
I can't do this, Holly. I cannot do this.
Can't what? Fight Anna? Why not?
Hammerstein covers his face with his hands. Holly pulls his hands down and looks at him face to face.
Jacob, be honest with me. Do you still have feelings for Anna?
Hammerstein had made himself a promise, a solemn oath, to be completely honest with Holly and never hide anything from her. That didn't make this any easier.
Deep down, Holly, yes. There are things that never got settled between us. Maybe this match will be the opportunity to settle those things, maybe not in a verbal way, but in a physical way. But maybe it won’t, I don't know. But, Holly, I want to know this. I love you and only you. You are the one that I want to spend the rest of my life with.
Besides, the Anna Mathews that I loved is gone. She may as well be dead. This new Anna Mathews, she looks completely different. She talks completely different. She is completely different. I may as well be wrestling a stranger. And maybe that's for the best.
Holly tries her best to not be hurt. She knows his feelings for her are true, and she can tell that this is as hard on her husband as it is on her. She stiffens her spine and looks right into Hammerstein's eyes.
Then you do this. Go sign that contract. You beat her ass and you take that medal. Then you come home to me, where you belong.
Holly takes Hammerstein's face in her hands and kisses him deeply.
As Hammerstein walks out of Holly's office, new thoughts flood his mind.
Perhaps this match was a good idea. An opportunity to put these undealt with feelings to rest.
Besides, this present day Anna was not the Anna he had loved. She remembered no real details of their relationship, and if she couldn't remember, he couldn't cause her anymore heartache.
It was, as he had told Holly before, as if he were wrestling a complete stranger.
To this Anna, it would be just another match. Without the memories and the hurt that came with them, this was just another title defense, and Hammerstein was just another challenger.
That thought made him smile. He knew he would be getting Anna Mathews, the wrestler, not Anna, his ex-lover. He knew she would fight from a strategic angle, rather than an emotional one.
That made her more dangerous.
It also made it easier to fight her with nothing held back. He could purge himself of all the love he still felt for her, make a definitive statement in defeating her, and win The Estrel Medal all in one fell swoop.
And that made signing the contract much easier.
