OFF-CAMERA
Everybody’s had that one friend. The one who’s good looking and popular. Who makes them better. Who they look up to and wonder why they’re hanging out with the likes of them. Who leaves them wondering if they can be any good on their own.
For me, Jason is that friend. A guy who was a Champion before, is a Champion now, but somehow still wants to hang out with a fat dork who dresses up as a superhero. I don’t get it - but whenever I ask, the only response I get is ’shut up, Walt, you’re my friend.’
What’s worse, though, is that our friendship has me second-guessing myself. With Jason, I’ve only lost one match since joining Pollomania; without him, I’ve only won one. I lost my last two singles matches, and while I’d like to think I made Tiger Mask stand up and pay attention, the fact remains.
Without Jason, I’m still a loser.
Without me, he’s still a winner.
That’s why I wonder why he sticks around. I know it’s not because he thinks he can exploit me; that’s not how he rolls. No, Jason – former independent champion and current Supremo Champion - wants to be my friend. Jason, who wouldn’t hurt a fly unless he had to, went against his principles so that fat dork Wally Stravinsky could have a taste of what it’s like to be a Champion. That doesn’t strike me as something a guy who’s only in it for himself would do. But Jason did it. For me. And I have no idea why.
Worse, most times, when your cool friend helps you out, you’re at a disadvantage. Because no matter how cool they think you are, you know you have nothing to offer that they wouldn’t be able to get on their own.
Fortunately, in my case, I do have something to offer Jason. See, he may be the cool guy with the track record, but he’s small and not that strong; and me, I may just be a loser in spandex who gets laughed out of every building, but when it’s time to punch a dude, I’m your guy.
In other words, I may not be hero material, but I make for one heck of a sidekick.
And next week, in Philadelphia, I get to prove it yet again. Though this time, Jason might not need my help at all – where every other team so far has tried to cheat, HERO are probably going to play fair. Still, it’s always nice for the hero to have backup – and for me, it’s an honor to be there for my partner. And who knows? Maybe I’ll have another star-making performance. Heck, maybe it’ll be better. Maybe I’ll even get the pin.
If I don’t, though, that’s fine too. If keeping me and Jason in the running for those Twin Egg Championships means giving up the spotlight, then I will.
After all, there’s no ‘I’ in team.
