OFF-CAMERA
'Walter...'
'Not now, Lyndsey.'
'Walter...!'
'Not now, Lyndsey...!'
'WALTER!!'
'I said not NOW!!!' Why am I yelling at my girlfriend? I love her! Guys who love their girlfriends don't yell at them.
'FINE.. Be like that.' Aaaand now she's mad. And rightfully so. Nice going, Wally. You dork.
'Look...Lyndz...I'm sorry, okay? There's just a lot on my mind right now...'
'I'll say there is!' Lyndz's tone has softened, but not by much. 'Walter, what were you thinking?!'
'I dunno. I guess I thought...' ...I could help? I'd actually make myself useful after letting Jay down in Montreal? I'd prove myself? '...I guess I didn't think.'
'That's right. You didn't. You didn't think for a minute. You didn't think about how Tiger and his crew usually win matches. You didn't think maybe he'd have it in for the partner of the guy who beat him for his belt. No, you just saw him run his mouth, and whoosh – Owl Man flew right in. Right into his trap!' The anger is back in Lyndsey's tone in full force, and it's all I can do not to flinch.
'I was trying to make it up to Jay', I stammer. 'Y'know, for what happened last time...'
'Oh really?' Lyndsey was already walking away, but she rounds right back on me again. 'And how do you think you help Jay the most? By being there for him for the rest of this tournament? By watching his back and helping him win matches and take you guys all the way? Or by getting yourself thrown in the hospital by those freaks because you wanted to play the hero?'
'But Lyndsey', I point out. 'I am a hero!'
She scoffs. 'Yeah, you're one all right.' Her words are icicles, her eyes daggers. 'Guess it's true what they say about heroes having more heart than brains.'
With that, she turns and stalks out of the room, leaving me to stare numbly after her, a whole lot of words stuck in my throat.
Final Word Count: 337
(No, I didn't accidentally think the limit was 400 again - it really WAS that short to begin with!)
