'I don't wanna hear it, J.'
'But Jenny...you saw the booking...'
'...I saw the booking, and I know what you're gonna say, and I don't wanna hear it.'
'But you know how multi-man matches went for me in the big ti---'
'Oh, for Pete's sake!' Jenny groans, throwing her hands up. 'Enough with the big time!'
'But you know what I went through the--'
'I know what you went through there', Jenny interrupts. 'You won't let anyone forget about it. I also know how you dealt with it: you ran off to Texas to hide under a mask. The guy I grew up with wouldn't have done that. He would have dusted himself off and dealt with it!'
'Well, that guy is gone!' Both Jen and I are screaming at this point. 'He's been gone for a while now!'
'Really?!' Jenny yells. 'Because guess who I see when I watch 'El Vainillo'? I don't see the guy who went to the big leagues and choked, the one you keep going on about. I see the guy who used to go out in front of five people, wrestle his butt off, and be happy that he was getting to live his dream. I missed that guy, J. I thought he actually was gone. But he's not. He's just pretending to be someone else, for some reason.'
Jenny's tender tone and expression suddenly make me feel abashed, and I concede:
'Yeah, I guess you're right. I am being dumb.'
'Good. I'm glad you're admitting it.'
'With that said, though, I still suck at multi-man matches...'
'That's because you psych yourself out, dummy!', Jenny scolds. 'If you go into anything in life thinking you're gonna lose, you're probably gonna lose. But if you believe you're good enough, you can do anything. I expected you of all people to know that!'
She's right – I should know it. After all, it's the same lesson I've tried to teach both the Monkey Nation and the Vainillos for the better part of a year now.
'You're right. I'm sorry.'
'Good. Now. These people you're fighting...' She brings the Pollomania card up on her phone and begins to read: 'Mr. Crazy...Zar...Zag..'
'Zargnax. He thinks he's an alien.'
'He thinks he's a what!?'
'An alien. And Wildstar D is supposed to be a videogame hero. The others are just normal dudes, though.'
Jenny looks at me like I'm the biggest idiot in the world. 'This is who you think you'll have a hard time against?! A bunch of lunatics?'
'They're not lunatics, Jen', I point out. 'And they are very talented---'
Jen doesn't let me finish. 'I don't care how talented they are. If you don't win this belt on Wednesday against these guys, I'll eat my hat.'
'The one you don't have?', I quip. Jenny smiles.
'Yeah. That one.'
And that is the last anyone says about the match all afternoon.
