'A multi-man match. Great.'
I click away from the Pollomania website moodily, as, by my side, my best friend squints at me in confusion.
'What's wrong with a multi-man match?'
I snort. 'What's wrong, Keith? Remember...the big time? Remember how multi-person matches went for me then?' I don't even let him reply. 'Of course you don't. No one does. Because in one of them, I embarrassed myself, and in the other, I made an impact for five seconds and then got lost in the shuffle.'
Those are still painful to even think about. Especially the first one. A huge event, wrestlers from all over, a cash prize on the line...and I last less than two minutes inside the ring. In the other one, at least I got people talking for a while, but it was far from my brightest moment, either. And that's not even counting the five-way dance where I lost to a first-match rookie because of my own stupidity. Yeah...there's a reason I still shudder whenever I'm booked in a multi-person match.
Too bad Keith doesn't care.
'Hold up, though, dawg...wasn't there one time you won a belt in a multi-person match?'
'Yeah. I guess...' The ACE Junior Pro Championship Scramble. The exception to the rule. The one example everyone brings up when trying to tell me I'm not hopeless in Scramble scenarios. The time I beat four of the company's best competitors, including their undefeated Champion, and walked out with a title.
The thing is, though...
...the thing is, that wasn't a particularly stellar performance, either. In fact, I got lucky. If I hadn't been falling on top of Flame Puppy as the buzzer went for the time limit, she would have been the winner. She should have been the winner. Which is why I don't publicize that one much, either.

Still, as they say, a win is a win is a win, so I guess Keith has a point.
And he knows it.
'Well...then what the heck you 'fraid of, 'b'? You done it last time, you can do it this time!'
'Yeah, Keith, but last time was...'
'...last time was nothin'. Dang, J, why we gotta have this talk every. Single. Time? You been undefeated forever, dawg. How you still don't know how good you are?'
I sigh. 'I'm just not confident, Keith, okay? There's too many variables!'
'Screw the variables, homie! You a Champion, brother. Believe in yourself. Ain't nobody else gonna do it for you. You feel me?'
As always, I nod. Keith has this way of making me see how dumb I am for doubting myself, that not even Jenny can match. He's the best friend a guy like me could hope for, and I'm lucky to have him by my side.
As for Wednesday...I hope those other five dudes are ready. 'Cause they'll have a Vanilla Midget coming at them.
Undefeated.
And planning to stay that way.
