[CONEY ISLAND, NEW YORK - 2015]
The tiles on the ceiling are a dinghy off yellow, the color of split pea soup mixed with water. Some of the tiles are cracked, others are missing, and a few have been replaced with other tiles that don't quite match. The jagged and uneven mess looks like the teeth of a cigarette stained smile. A smile that is laughing out our protagonist's misfortune. Larry Sangestino, The Man Out Of Time, has lost the last thing in the world that mattered to him. Yes, The Supremo Championship now belongs to Zookeeper Willie.
But that’s fitting, isn’t it? Losing the title is like an exclamation point at end of a sentence. Larry’s time in the future has been lackluster at best and terrible at worst. Nothing has gone Larry’s way since arriving here and the constant failure is starting to weigh on him heavily. Back in the 1920’s there wasn’t a man, woman, or child that could hold a candle to Larry in the ring. But that, like the times, have changed. Larry is not longer the paragon of grappling proficiency that he claims to be. Hell, he couldn’t even managed to best a fat man in khaki shorts.
”Ahhhhhhhh”
Larry let’s out a defeated sigh and turns away from the smiling grin on the ceiling. Now staring blankly at the slightly less dinghy wall, Larry begins to whisper to himself.
”It isn’t fair I say! To be plucked out of one's own time and abandoned in a future where you don’t understand is a fate worse than death. Verily I say, I would have preferred to have not been born at all than to have endured this hardship. Curse you and your time traveling contraption Yuri Black, curse you right to hell.”
”Come now friend, Larry surely you don’t mean that.”
Startled, Larry rolls out of his cot spilling himself and his blankets onto the floor. It takes a few seconds for Larry to fight free from the tangled mess of bed linens but when he does, what he sees nearly kills the words in his throat.
”...Y...Yu...Yur... Yuri! Yuri you’re back, Huzzah! I knew you wouldn’t abandon me here!”
Larry quickly gets to his feet and reaches out to shake Yuri’s hand but is unable to. In fact Larry’s hand slides right through Yuri’s like it’s not even there.
”What is this? Have I finally gone mad?”
”No you certainly haven’t gone mad. You see Larry, I’m not the Yuri you know, I’m just a hologram. I was sent here by Yuri, to this when because the timestream is in flux. I was sent here to help you, Larry - the future of all mankind depends on it.
Larry looks down to his feet and then back up at the hologram of Yrui Black. His expression has changed from one of sadness to determination.
”Then lets save the world!”
