So It's Come To This.
Pollomania's final show of the year couldn't have had a more appropriate title. Because after months of people coming and going, rivalries building, titles changing hands and at least one Vanilla Midget impressing everybody...it has indeed come to this. A five-on-five match inside a structure that sounds like it belongs in an amusement park rather than a wrestling ring. Still, anyone dismissing the Playhouse as anything less than dangerous is in for a bad time once we finally step inside it. That structure deserves respect – and I know the Everyday Heroes, at least, will treat it that way.
That's what Owlie and I named our team – the Everyday Heroes. It was his idea, of course, but it does have a nice ring to it. It also perfectly describes a team composed of a neighborhood vigilante, two luchadors, their boss, and a former wrestler turned soccer mom, who all want what's best for the fans and the industry, and are dead-set on beating the bad guys on the other side of the mat. They – we – are Everyday Heroes.
In fact, the whole thing is sort of like a wrestling-themed version of one of those underdog sports movies. It's all there: a ragtag team put together at the last minute - and consisting of rookies, out-of-shape members and well-meaning try-hards - the smug, arrogant corporate Champions that nobody likes, and the huge personal stakes. Everything looks straight out of Hollywood. Hopefully, like in those movies, the team with good intentions will win in the end.
In fact, a victory by the heroes-for-hire inside the Pollo Playhouse, on December 9, could mean a lot to the future of Pollomania. Even if most of our team is unlikely to stay on beyond this one-off appearance, me and Owlie (the team captains) are still going to be sticking around. Getting one over on The Canadian Embassy Misfits and Friends could let both the fans and management know that we have their backs, and are not going anywhere. That we, not Tigre and his fair-weather friends, are the future of the company.
As far as whether I trust the replacement members to do what Grin would have, the answer is yes, of course. If I didn't, I wouldn't have picked these to be on my team, and I wouldn't have accepted Owlie's one (vital!) addition to the squad. I trust Rojo and Miss Reyes implicitly, and Owlie's proven he can carry his weight (no pun intended.) Amy Drew, I don't know that well, but any friend of Owlie's is a friend of mine.
At any rate, even if I didn't trust them, this is the team I would have to make do with. Fortunately, I do trust them, and the fact that the 'enemy' is underestimating us admittedly makes me smile. In fact, if I were Tigre, I'd brace myself for a surprise.
After all, heroes are born in the unlikeliest places...
